WEIGHT POSTING FOR MEMORIAL BRIDGE IN PORTSMOUTH 10-TON LIMIT IN EFFECT ON JULY 13 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Date: 07/13/09

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces the Memorial Bridge carrying the US Route 1 over the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine will be reduced to “Weight Limit 10-Tons” effective Friday, July 10, 2009.

This reduction in weight posting, from its current posting of “Weight Limit 20-Ton”, is necessary following evaluation of a recent detailed inspection of the bridge, which determined the extent of severe deterioration on the lift span carrying members.

During the weight posting period, trucks exceeding the 10-ton limit will have to cross between Maine and New Hampshire on the Interstate 95 “Piscataqua River” bridge or the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge (US Route 1 Bypass) if under its 20-ton posting.  The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge was recently reduced to 20-ton weight limit due to similar conditions and concerns.
