Launched in March 2009, the Maine-NH Connections Study will identify the long-term multimodal transportation needs of the area and evaluate the transportation alternatives that best address those needs for crossing between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. The Connections Study will evaluate the issues affecting the three existing bridges (I-95, Sarah Mildred Long Bridge/US Route 1 Bypass, and the Memorial Bridge/US Route 1) over the Piscataqua River.
It is important for everyone to know that no decision has yet been made regarding any possible solution. An extensive public outreach program is in place to encourage a broad a range of public feedback. Please give us your thoughts and opinions regarding this Study by whatever method you prefer. A meeting schedule will be posted and updated regularly.
The Connections Study will include a full analysis of transportation, land use, social, economic, and environmental conditions. It will consider and evaluate a range of feasible alternatives, both build and no-build, and include an assessment of rail, highway, transit, marine navigation, pedestrian and bicycle modes of transportation. The study will evaluate the engineering and environmental (both the built and the natural environment) feasibility of the range of alternatives in order to identify the preferred alternative(s). The results will be in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Maine’s Sensible Transportation Policy Act (STPA).
